In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Political Consultations Underway
In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several leading political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
